What is the Neighborhood Pride Program?

E-mail Print PDF

The Green Coalition Neighborhood Pride Program encourages San Jacinto Valley residents to keep their neighborhoods clean, green and safe. Our e-waste program alone has collected over 100,000 lbs of electronic waste that might have ended in the trash or sidewalks. Recently the Green Coalition has successfully lobbied and had passed Hemet’s amended abandoned shopping cart ordinance. We would gladly help any neighborhood volunteer to start a cleanup campaign in their neighborhood. Getting concerned neighbors involved by helping other neighbors to mow their lawn, clean foreclosed properties, collect electronic waste are some of the few things we can do. You are not alone! Both cities of Hemet and San Jacinto are willing to support any of these neighborhood efforts. Neighbors are also encouraged to be vigilant such as reporting any suspicious activity along their route, sidewalk problems that would affect pedestrians, reporting abandoned shopping carts, discouraging commercial vehicle parking in residential neighborhoods and any other issues that staff of both Hemet and San Jacinto cities can address.

Abandoned Shopping Cart Program

gc-shop-cart

Background

Many retail establishments in the San Jacinto Valley provide shopping carts for the convenience of customers while shopping on the premise of such businesses. However, shopping carts removed from the business premises and left abandoned on public or private property are a public nuisance and an eyesore that hurt our neighborhoods. They can be dangerous, and tend to attract litter and more carts. It depreciates our property values and causes blighting conditions in the community. Moreso the cost of lost shopping carts are passed on to the consumer in terms of higher prices on basic commodities like food.

Shopping carts removed from businesses premises or even possessing a cart without the store’s permission – is illegal and subject to a substantial fine. That is why the Green Coalition of San Jacinto Valley is working with the City of Hemet and shopping cart owners to find a reasonable solution to this menacing problem. Currently, the Green Coalition I seeking funding so we can buy portable shopping carts for distribution to low income seniors. Please send your donation to the Green Coalition address in this website

Electronic Waste Disposal (E-waste)

E-mail Print PDF

Background

The Green Coalition of San Jacinto Valley hosted electronic waste (e-waste) events in 2009 and 2010. From those events, we collected over 100,000 pounds of electronic waste from valley residents!
E-waste is comprised of TVs computers, monitors, radios, cell phones, and almost anything that might have an electronic component or has an electrical cord.
As the rate of electronic products grow and as awareness of technology’s harmful impacts on the environment spreads, e-waste is becoming one of the America’s most critical environmental issues.
Here in the valley, there is a growing trend of residents who dispose their electronics in the regular trash bins or by simply leaving it by the curb. Unfortunately, these disposal methods are haphazard today.
Due to the e-waste toxic content, improper disposal can lead to leaks of more than 100 chemicals that are harmful to our health and environment. Moreover, carelessly disposing e-waste by leaving it by the curbside or sidewalks trashes our beautiful valley.
To further proper disposal, we also selected to partner with a recycler who can actually recycle most of the e-waste material to local manufacturers compared The service also protects personal security by thoroughly destroying discarded hard drives and other data storage devices which are frequently used by criminals to obtain banking information, phone numbers, and private databases. Many computer users mistakenly believe that such data is permanently erased from their hard drives when they reformat or erase their computer files. Actually such information can be easily recovered. The e-waste program eliminates that possibility by physically destroying hard drives and other data storage devices making them unreadable.
